Sex and the City star Kim Cattrall might seem like an odd choice to join the cast of Stranger Things, but it makes perfect sense when you really think about it.

Cattrall is famed for her role as Samantha Jones in the HBO's Sex and the City. Before that, though, the actress appeared in a string of great 1970s and '80s movies - such as the very first Police Academy movie with Steve Guttenberg, and alongside Kurt Russell in John Carpenter's Big Trouble in Little China.

Some Stranger Things fans have claimed that they can actually hear a similarity between the shows iconic opening theme composed by Michael Stein and the main theme to Big Trouble in Little China by Alan Howarth and Carpenter. Additionally, in the last episode of the third season, the character of Billy arrives at the mall dressed just like Russell's Jack Burton from that 1986 movie.

Like all the films featured on this list, the likes of Police Academy and Big Trouble in Little China have in some way inspired Stranger Things - so why not bring in some of the stars of those films to give a little wink to the die-hard fans watching the show?
