8 Best Unsung Antiheroes Of TV's Golden Age
2. Annie Wilkes (Lizzy Caplan) - Castle Rock
The horror genre is often about giving externalization to our worst fears and Annie Wilkes is driven by that universality of wanting to shelter your daughters from the horrors reeked upon your childhood. Based off the Oscar-winning character from the 1990 film Misery, the second season of Castle Rock would be little more than an uneventful prequel if not for the way that Wilkes is fleshed out so well in Caplan’s hands.
Annie’s upbringing is a tragic one and she doesn’t get through it without blood on her hands. At the same time, if the anti-hero is defined by decaying morals, Annie is defined by decaying mental capacity beyond her control.
It’s no less scary that she has a kid under her charge but are there legitimate fears (especially within the burgeoning gang war of Castle Rock) to protect her from? That's the question Castle Rock takes its sweet time in answering.
