8 Current TV Shows That Don't Treat Audiences Like Idiots

2. The Newsroom

Aaron Sorkin delivered one of the greatest TV shows of all time in The West Wing and so it's a joy to have him writing for TV again, even it is coming to an end all too soon. The Newsroom is a show willing to push boundaries, asking challenging questions about the society we live in. Whether you believe it to be agenda-heavy or not, there is no denying that it makes you think. The use of real life events as source material is a clever motif within the show. It creates drama and discussion in a narrative the audience can relate to. It's also likely the reason that The Newsroom garners controversy; using real stories as a springboard to attack the negative elements of society is much more likely to turn people against the show. Ultimately, the stories that take place within the world of Atlantis Cable News idealise what we believe TV news broadcasting should be, just as The West Wing presented an idealised view of politics. As much as it is entertainment, filled with drama and comedy in equal measure, it is also a platform for us to question how we can better ourselves. For that reason, The Newsroom is a rare thing indeed. You might feel vastly intelligent keeping up with the moral debates and political undercurrent through the show, but you'll also feel bettered by your ability to think and question how we live our lives. With just six episodes in its final season, enjoy the show while you can.
