8 Fan-Service TV Episodes Everyone Hated

2. Supernatural - Despair

There is so much fan-service in Supernatural that it can be difficult to pinpoint just one moment. The thing is, though, for the most part the fans of the show adore it.

For one example, the 200th episode featured a musical rendition of the Winchester brothers’ lives and, as cringe as that may sound to a lot of people, it was unbelievably well-received. Like 9.5 out of 10 on IMDb well-received.

There is one recent moment that comes to mind, however, for earning some particularly bad reactions. This comes in the aptly titled episode, Despair.

Shipping can be a contentious issue in any show and Supernatural gave way to one of the internet’s most famous ships: Destiel. In the show’s final season they learned just how divisive shipping can be, as a moment between the characters in question earned a reaction unlike any other.

In a tearful goodbye, angel Castiel declares his love for best friend and long-time companion Dean. Misha Collins, who plays Castiel, confirmed that there was no ambiguity about the kind of love it was either, stating explicitly that this was a “homosexual declaration of love.”

Fans were dead split. For every one Destiel shipper crying happy tears in front of their TV, there was also one disgruntled fan furious over how it played out: particularly because Cas dies immediately after he makes his big statement. Misha Collins himself even admitted this wasn’t ideal, acknowledging that it really did play into the long term trope of Hollywood “kill[ing] the gays.”
