There's nothing like a good hoax to make you question the line between fiction and reality. For some reason, society seems predisposed to believing what they see on television. Of course, every year more and more people learn to question what they're seeing and what they're being told, but when television first started gaining popularity, it simply didn't cross people's minds that they might be being lied to €“ especially when it came to news broadcasts. What this meant was that television could be used to perpetrate all different kinds of mischief, from convincing viewers that their favourite dinner grows on trees to terrifying the life out of an entire country. While there were plenty of great television hoaxes pulled back in the day, there's also been several prominent hoaxes enacted more recently. In many ways these more modern hoaxes are even more fascinating, as they don't rely on public ignorance about the world at large, and have to protect themselves from a simple Google-based debunking.
