Enterprise: The First Adventure by Vonda McIntyre is another great novel that looks at some of the TOS's greatest adventures, except this one looks at its beginnings rather than picking up from where a story ended. This is a prequel story (written before the concept of a prequel became common practise) set before the very first regular season episode "Where No Man Has Gone Before". This novel speculates how the legendary captain and crew of the Enterprise came together before the series began, giving us a better idea of why Gary Mitchell was Kirk's best friend before Spock or how Leonard McCoy became the ship's surgeon, along with additional insights into the other crew members' lives before they came aboard the Enterprise.
