Sometimes it's up to the fans to continue their love of the original storylines. One of the ways fans do this is through simple board games. There is no simpler way to immerse yourself in the world of make-believe and pretend that you are Kirk commanding the Enterprise or Commander Kang of the Imperial Klingon Fleet finally about to rid the universe of Kirk! One of the really fun games that are out there right now is ne made by Wizkids called Star Trek: Fleet Captains. It's a game that capitalizes on the theme of exploration in Star Trek by keeping the individual board tiles secret until a player's ship lands on it. A player wins the game by completing a set amount of mission scenarios that add up to a certain amount of points agreed upon ahead of time. Playing one of the three major races (Federation, Klingon or Romulan), these missions duplicate many of the encounters from the TOS and it is up to the player to decide how they should be completed. Combat missions are commonly encountered by the Klingons whereas the Federation tries to complete as many scientific ones. A later expansion brought in the Romulans who try to win through guile and strategic forethought. Sometimes combat between exploring races is an option that occurs and makes for very exciting turns. It's a game that brings in familiar threads like the Organian Peace Treaty (from the TOS episode "A Taste of Armageddon") or the encounter with the Gorns (from the TOS episode "Arena"). Using recognizable threads, ships and characters from the TOS lets the player decide how these things will be expressed throughout the game. There can't be any greater homage to maintaining what the fans love about this series than that. ... Unless you count actually making your own show.
