1. Billie Dean Howard’s Appearance Doesn’t Really Accomplish Anything

FX

While Paulson was busy doing all of the work behind the camera, she did make a brief appearance on-screen. This time, it’s not as Cordelia Foxx nor is it Wilhemina Venable, but instead she portrays Billie Dean Howard. It was really great seeing the actress’ very first character make a comeback, but unlike all of the other Murder House characters that make an appearance in the episode, Billie Dean doesn’t really have a purpose. She walks around the house aimlessly before disappearing altogether.

Paulson is given a reduced role for the episode, which is understandable given that she directs the instalment in its entirety, so it’s likely that Billie Dean is merely featured for nostalgia purposes. Considering the character is a medium, and that the narrative takes place inside a haunted house, it’s unfortunate the writers couldn’t come up with a stronger reason to include the character. For example, she could’ve aided Madison in communicating with the spirits of the Murder House.
