Arrow: 12 Greatest Plots Of The Series So Far

By Laura Hurley /

12. Oliver Was A Killer

Arrow got off to an unexpected start when it introduced its hero as a man who€™s super into killing bad guys whenever convenient for him. Oliver Queen going dead behind the eyes and snapping necks to preserve his secret was a heck of a scary way to sell the good guy, but it was one of the best moves that Arrow has ever made. By starting Oliver off in the darkness, the show set him on an overall arc that has guided the narrative even when plots du jour go off the rails. Arrow is fundamentally the story of a hero€™s journey, and that never would have worked if Oliver hadn€™t started out as a killer. Also, Oliver snapping necks and firing arrows into bad guy chest cavities meant that Stephen Amell could show off his athleticism to an astonishing degree. Honestly, the Season 1 stunts of Oliver not holding back are among the most remarkable as have ever hit the small screen, and they€™re definitely rewatchable.
