The Twenties were an incredible decade which saw political scandal, decadent fashions, a rise in illegal gambling and the birth of the speakeasy. While it may not be the ideal time period in which to live, we're most certainly loving living it vicariously through the HBO phenomenon that is Boardwalk Empire. To celebrate the Blu-ray and DVD release of the second season, the fine folks at Premier PR held a 1920s Grooming Event at Tommy Guns salon on Regent Street. Ladies were treated to makeovers and hair styling while the men received hair-cuts and a shave to gain that unmistakeably distinguished 1920s look. My favourite feature of the night (other than the man serving delectable canapés leading me to intermittently pounce on him all evening like a grizzly bear on a salmon) was DIY cocktail bar. Here you could mix your own Cutty Buck cocktail containing Cutty Sark whisky (the brand used in the show), lime, bitters and topped with Ginger Beer. It was delicious; the type of drink that would have been created if Al Capone had joined The Famous Five. The evening also offered attendees a chance to try their hand at gambling a prevalent pursuit in the show itself. Unlike 1920s Atlantic City, however, there were no losses significant enough to merit the player getting taken out back and taught a lesson. Not that this reviewer saw anyway. But I did leave by 8:30. Wrapping up the evening saw a sultry burlesque performance from Gwendoline Lamour with a stunning costume; this was noticeably apposite considering much of the shows acclaim has been regarding its exploration of the decades fashions. Overall the event provided a perfect taste into what has excited us about Boardwalk Empire since its debut. If you havent seen Season 1, then drop what youre doing immediately (unless its a cup of hot tea; that would be ridiculous) and rush out and acquire it now. Season 2 is available to purchase on DVD and Blu-Ray September 3rd 2012.
