4. Wesley Wyndam-Pryce

Even more so than Cordelia, however, former Watcher Wesley completely transformed - several times - between his first appearance in Buffy season three and the finale of Angel season five.

At first Wesley was a useless fop who endlessly annoyed the Scoobies with his interfering Watcher's Council-mandated ways. On Angel, however, he grows into a much harder, world-weary character - after being abandoned by his friends and having his throat slit, he goes to some pretty dark places.

And while his love for co-worker Fred (who narrowly missed out her own place on this list) saves him for a while, eventually he loses her too and ends up as a shell of his former self.

Going from comic relief to anti-hero to a broken, tragic figure, it's quite an enormous evolution but thanks to Alexis Denisof he is always recognisably Wesley.
