10. Jonathan Levinson

Jonathan was a highly complex figure. Originally a background character and student at Sunnydale High, he emerged in Season Six as one third of the villainous Trio. Alongside Warren Mears and Andrew Wells, Jonathan took pleasure in messing with the Slayer and playing big bad. Eventually, though, he and Andrew left Sunnydale, only to return in the hopes of saving Sunnydale from the First Evil.

Out of nowhere, however, Andrew killed his best friend in an attempt to open the Hellmouth after been manipulated by the nefarious First Evil sorts.

Jonathan's death was shocking and cruel, especially since it looked as though he was ready to to redeem himself, and this demise solidified the new big bad of the First Evil as a force to be reckoned with, able to twist people's minds to do its bidding.
