9. Shirley Bennett

It's heart-breaking to see Shirley at the bottom of this list, but sadly, it makes sense. Yvette Nicole Brown did a fantastic job with the character, as she took a role that could have been very flat and turned her into a loving part of the series. Sadly there are a few drawbacks to her character that cause her to lag behind the others.

First, come the positives, and there's a fair few for her. As the surrogate mother of the group, she was always very loving and supportive, which made her such a loveable part of the show. However, there was a darker side to her that came from her passive aggression, anger issues and obsessive - arguably bigoted - religious values.

Despite these exciting character points, she was let down by the fact that she lacked personality or development outside of her archetype. Of all the characters in the show, she's easily the one who changed the least as she mainly remained as the caring motherly figure throughout the show.

Shirley gets points for being so wholesome, but her humour and character wasn't as strong as the others.
