Constantine: 17 Easter Eggs And References You Need To See

By Tom Baker /

13. Chas Chandler

Hey, it's Reggie Ledoux! Compared to his turn in True Detective, Charles Halford's character in Constantine is downright angelic. If a little unholy. Introduced as John's longest surviving friend, it turns out that a fatal car crash was not as lethal as it looked when Chas turns up again later in the episode to the surprise of Liv Aberdeen. It'll be less of a surprise for readers of the comics, who are wise to Mr Chandler's tricks; or to people who saw the weird Americanised Constantine starring Keanu Reeves, with Shia LeBouf as his cabby sidekick loosely based on Chas. Right now Chas seems confined to a supporting role - and not a particularly chatty one either, based on how John introduces him - but he managed to break out in his own miniseries called Chas: The Knowledge in 2009, where he attempts to seal away a demon who's rampaging across London. Obviously the Chandler in the TV show is a little different (he's a Yank rather than a Brit, for one thing), but it's possible their close connection from the comics might be reused: Constantine killed his mother, who was a mad magician, and they've been bonded ever since.
