Daredevil: 10 Issues That Season 2 Needs To Fix

8. Karen's Lack Of Personality

Given a worse deal than Dawson or Zurer in Daredevil season 1 was Deborah Ann Woll, an actress who promisingly ranged from sexy and sullen to smart and innocent in True Blood, but who was saddled with Daredevil's most under-written character. Beyond the issue her gender obviously posed to the writers - how to make a former victim seem heroic when ultimately the men are still the ones getting all the results? - Woll's Karen simply didn't have much of a personality. Despite personal time spent with Foggy and Ben Urich, Karen ended up coming across like a bit of a blank slate in season 1, though Woll's efforts to add some spark at least ensured Karen wasn't a total bore. For season 2, the writers might consider giving Karen's story flashbacks like the ones afforded to Matt and Fisk in season 1; anything to liven the character up. Giving Karen her own side-project by partnering her up with Ben in season 1 was a good move, but it's not enough - the character needs motivation, and a history that informs who she is and what she does.
