Doctor Who: 10 Final Candidates For The 12th Doctor

By Edward Owen /

1. Peter Capaldi

Capaldi is the bookies favourite to take the job, and it€™s not hard to see why. A high-calibre television actor who occasionally rocks up in films €“ he was most recently spotted in World War Z €“ Capaldi€™s career sees him occupy that coveted halfway-house of an established-yet-available name that Who€™s producers might seek as the safe option. He would€™ve also done the tried-and-tested route of taking a minor part in the show beforehand, having played Roman father Caecilius in the critically lauded Fires of Pompeii €“ coincidentally an episode which saw Karen Gillian cameo as a soothsayer €“ and took a part in the ridiculously awesome Torchwood Children of Earth. He€™ll be known to at least some of the crew, making for an easier transition. Yet what might be Capaldi€™s biggest strength €“ his status in the TV world €“ might also be his biggest weakness. Simply put, Capaldi€™s most famous role is that of foul-mouthed spin doctor Malcolm Tucker in The Thick Of It, and I don€™t think the foul-mouthed invective of the world€™s angriest Scot will ever be allowed near a family friendly TARDIS. However, I really hope that they have an outtake of him screaming €˜get the f**king f**k in the f**king TARDIS for f**k €˜s sake.€™ If they didn€™t, it€™d be one hell of a missed opportunity. Yet regardless, Capaldi is a very capable actor who possesses that intellectual streak so vital to the Doctor€™s characterisation and it also might be nice to have an older Doctor in the part, especially after the positively boyish Smith.
