Alongside House of Cards, Orange is the New Black is the other series that can be looked back upon as setting the standard for what was to follow, and it was an even more original show. Based on the memoir by Piper Kerman, the show sees a New York woman sentenced to 15 months in Litchfield Prison. While Season 1 was mostly focused on Piper, the second expanded to really showcase its impressive roster of characters, with the episodes all featuring flashbacks to the lives of various inmates before prison. Season 3 was a little more divisive, but still a darkly funny, at-times shocking and emotional series that wasn't afraid to take risks, and given the way that ended the stage is set for Season 4 to get back to its best.
