6. Changes (S1E9)

The penultimate episode of The Umbrella Academy's first season is an important one, as it begins to set up the story's finale. One of the most shocking scenes comes when Vanya finally turns on Leonard, killing him in one of the most brutal ways imaginable. It was clear to all that he wouldn't make it to the end of the season, but it seemed certain that he would be a part of the final showdown at least.

The rest of the episode is very focused around Vanya and her powers, as she is locked away by Luther. Through more haunting flashbacks, we are made to feel truly sorry for her, even as she is perceived as the villain. Creating an antagonist that an audience can connect to and empathise with is incredibly difficult to do, but the Umbrella Academy sculpted Vanya's arc perfectly.

This was one of the most action packed episodes of the entire first season, moving all the necessary pieces in place for the final confrontation that, surprisingly, would not feature Leonard as we thought it would.
