Discovery beamed the Star Trek franchise back onto the small screen last year, and now CBS are looking to capitalise on that success by further expanding its enterprise.

As per Variety, the network has signed Alex Kurtzman (who co-wrote Stark Trek and Stark Trek Into Darkness) to a five-year deal that will see him overseeing Star Trek, which aside from being the new showrunner of Discovery also includes developing a bunch of new series. These reportedly include:

- A series set at Starfleet Academy from Runaways and Gossip Girl creators Stephanie Savage and Josh Schwartz.

- A limited series, the plot of which is being kept secret.

- A limited series based around the iconic Wrath of Khan storyline, or at least the character of Khan Noonien Singh himself.

- An animated show, for which the details are also being kept under wraps.

Along with those four, The Hollywood Reporter are saying that Kurtzman could bring back Patrick Stewart's Captain Jean-Luc Picard in a series that would serve as a sequel to The Next Generation, led by Stewart and involving producer Akiva Goldsmith, who departed Discovery after Season 1. It's unclear whether this is separate from the others mentioned by Variety, or if this could be the limited series (but if so, the secret is already out).

CBS have yet to confirm anything beyond a deal being inked with Kurtzman, but it seems clear they're looking to boldly go into creating a whole TV franchise empire.
