Game Of Thrones: 5 Key Characters That Appear To Have Been Cut From Season 5

2. 'Griff' And 'Young Griff'

One of the major victims of cuts between the page and the screen has been the backstory of Westeros in general. Though television viewers are aware of the major events of Robert's Rebellion, it hasn't been touched upon in any detail, meaning that anything relating to Rhaegar Targaryen, including his relationship with Lyanna Stark, the twisted stories of his father, the 'Mad King' Aerys Targaryen is largely unknown to most non book readers. Only in the recent fourth season did the deaths of his children, Rhaenys and Aegon, become a central part of the storyline as Oberyn Martell sought revenge on Gregor Clegane for their deaths. In A Dance With Dragons, a character by the name of 'Young Griff' is revealed as a travelling companion of Tyrion Lannister, who is smuggled out of King's Landing after his involvement in his father's death by Varys, a Targaryen supporter. Ostensibly the mission of 'Young Griff' and his father, 'Griff', is to meet with Daenerys Targaryen and pledge forces and ships for her cause. During the journey, however, Tyrion deduces the identity of his companions - 'Young Griff' is actually Aegon, or someone pretending to be him and claiming to have been switched with a peasant child by Varys ahead of Gregor Clegane's actions, whilst 'Griff' is actually Jon Connington, a former Hand of King Aerys. Together they seek to strengthen Aegon's claim through marriage to Daenerys, uniting her dragons with their mercenary force of 10000 men. The casting announcements for other characters associated with Tyrion's journey would indicate that he is still set to travel towards Daenerys in Meereen, though without Jon and Aegon, seemingly set to be major players in The Winds Of Winter, however, the journey that he takes will be a vastly different one.
