Game Of Thrones: 6 Best Moments From The Watchers On The Wall

By Brandon Jacobs /

1. Jon Says Goodbye To Ygritte

Following the killing of Styr, Jon recovers and turns to find himself facing Ygritte, the woman he loves, pointing an arrow at him once again. Instead of reacting with fear or worry, however, Jon can't help but smile at seeing her again after so long. Ygritte finds herself hesitating despite all her talk of killing him; her feelings for him keeping her from loosing the arrow. Their moment is interrupted by an arrow erupting from her chest, loosed by Olly as revenge for his father's death by her hand. She collapses in Jon's arms and laments for them having ever left that cave. Jon says they can go back, to which she responds "You know nothing, Jon Snow." Ygritte dies, and Jon is left to grieve for her as the battle continues around him. Let's take a moment to commend Rose Leslie for her wonderful portrayal of the fiery Wildling. Through Jon Snow she gave us a glimpse into the culture of the Free Folk, revealing that they aren't the monsters the stories made them to be (well, some of them), Tormund aside, the red-haired spear-wife was our main sounding board for learning about the culture north of The Wall, and her absence will leave a hole in proceedings. Her death scene was beautifully shot by Neil Marshall - his ability to tell a story visually peaks here as the action around them slows down to show how inconsequential it all is compared to the grief he is feeling. Their relationship was the classic doomed romance; one of them was going to inevitably die. It's the most crushing blow to Jon since the death of Ned Stark. It's a turning point for the noble bastard - he buries his grief by further validating his dedication to the Night's Watch, and every decision he makes as a leader going forward will be influenced by her loss, hence his decision to go after Mance Rayder himself at the end of the episode. Will he be successful? Only the next episode will tell.
