Game Of Thrones: Ranking Every Season 6 Storyline From Worst To Best
12. Journey To Oldtown
Key Characters: Samwell Tarly, Gilly
Best Moment: Sam stands up to his father.
Worst Moment: Pretty much everything else.
To be fair, nobody really had high hopes for this storyline. Sam is neither a skilled fighter nor a savvy diplomat, so most of his interesting plots in previous seasons have come from being around other characters. This time around, he has a few scant appearances scattered throughout, none of which are interesting.
Sam and Gilly's journey is necessary to complete, given the massive impact Sam could have in the upcoming war in Season 7. Truthfully, it could have been a lot worse, harkening back to the times of Bran's endless march through the snow in Seasons 3 and 4. If there is one upside, it's that it is brief enough to not be too offending.
However, while every other storyline on this list had a least a couple of highlights, this one lacked any interest whatsoever, with its only memorable moments being Sam taking his father's sword, and the final reveal of the Citadel. Everything else ended up being a slog to get through.
With the knowledge of the maesters likely becoming more valuable than ever with the inevitable rise of the White Walkers, Sam's prospects are looking up in the next two seasons. Here, however, he only manages to bore. Its overall redundancy secures it as the worst storyline of Season 6.
