Not only is Samwell Tarly basically the Samwise Gamgee to Jon Snow's Frodo, but he's also the story analogue for George R.R. Martin, and despite the author's predilection for killing his characters, it looks as though Sam will be kept alive.

The notion of him being the one chronicling the song of ice and fire is a compelling theory, but more than that is the fact he's the most unlikely (and thus perfect) survivor, from Ser Piggy to one of the heroes of the saga, and the sort of loyal, intelligent, yet oft-overlooked character who comes great in the end.
