With all the big non-book pairings of more recent years, it is easy to forget that Daenerys and Jorah have shared a relationship that goes back to the very early days of the show. Lifted directly from the books and delivered with an understated yet powerful presence by Emila Clarke and Iain Glenn, they have continued to be one of the strongest pairings on the show. Jorah was the one man to stand by Daenerys and support her when she was the frightened girl sold to Khal Drogo by her brother. He was the man who comforted her when she lost her husband and child; he was the man who helped her find her way to Qarth and again to Slaver's Bay and has been the voice of reason all the way to Mereen. He is also the man that has made Daenerys a better person, and despite some questionable miss-steps Daenerys has made since conquering Mereen, he helped her to see reason in dealing with the rebellious leaders at Astapor and Yunkai. So it was heart-breaking in The Mountain And The Viper to see that close kinship come to such an abrupt end, when Barristan Selmy discovered that Jorah and been pardoned by King Robert 'the Usurper' in exchange for spying on Daenerys for the Iron Throne. It was obvious that Jorah had long since moved on from that devious role but his past came back to bite him badly, and it was perhaps because of how close they had been that Daenerys chose exile over death. She was obviously distraught as she couldn't even look him in the eye. As for Jorah, he was a defeated man riding out of Mereen and Daeneryss heart.
