Ryan Murphy and Brad Falchuk (the guys who brought us Glee) American Horror Story is shaping up to be one of the scariest new shows on television. Described by Murphy as a €œpsychosexual thriller€ American Horror Story centres on the Harmon family who move from Boston to Los Angeles to try and reconcile their troubled past only to find that their new home has a troubled past of its own. The cast includes Dylan McDermott as Ben Harmon, a psychiatrist, Connie Britton as Vivien Harmon, Ben's wife, Taissa Farmiga as Violet, the Harmon's teenage daughter; Jessica Lange as Constance, the Harmon's neighbour; Evan Peters as Tate Langdon, one of Ben's patients; and Denis O'Hare as Larry Harvey. The creators say they took inspiration from horror films of the 70€™s, such as Rosemary€™s Baby, Don€™t Look Now and The Shining and it seems to have worked. According to E! Online the first episode is so scary it left the critics previewing it pretty freaked out,

American Horror Story screening was held last night for journalists and members of the Television Critics Association, and a Fox source tells me that some of the attendees were so frightened; they had to be escorted to their cars after the viewing. (Rumour also has it another reporter was too freaked out to enter her own teeny-tiny baby's room when he woke up for his 2 a.m. feeding because "the shadows are making him look...different." Ahem.)
It seems Murphy is turning out to be one of the most versatile show runners in television. While most will recognise him as the creator of Glee, bringing us our weekly dose of all singing, all dancing, unadulterated joy, he also created Nip Tuck, a drama that explored the dark side of plastic surgery. If the new show builds on Murphy€™s work in Nip Tuck, which had more than its fair share of dark and slightly twisted moments, American Horror Story could turn out to be one of the most unsettling and interesting shows out this year. The official word on the show from FX
€œWe€™re thrilled to welcome Ryan and Brad back to their original home,€ said Landgraf. €œThey have shown an uncanny ability to bring original series to the air unlike any that have come before, and to reconcile €™wildly entertaining€™ with the €™creatively ambitious.€™ Once again, American Horror Story is a wholly unique and original take on its genre with richly drawn characters. The ability to put together a cast of stars such as Dylan McDermott, Connie Britton, Denis O€™Hare, Frances Conroy and Oscar®-winner Jessica Lange speaks to the quality of the writing and storytelling. This series is going to blow audiences back in their seats, and we can€™t wait to have it on our air.€ € €œRyan and Brad are two of the most original voices working in television, and their singular vision is evident in every frame of American Horror Story,€ commented TCFTV Chairmen Dana Walden and Gary Newman. €œJust as they delivered a brand new take on the musical comedy in Glee, they€™ve completely reinvented the horror genre with this spellbinding series. Their script attracted a cast that is a virtual €™who€™s who€™ of award winning performers and the result is an electrifying piece of entertainment. It has long been our goal to bring this brilliant team back to John Landgraf and FX, where they had such success with Nip/Tuck. In American Horror Story, they are returning with something unlike anything else on the air that is a perfect fit for this channel€™s brand.€

In the latest one, aptly named €˜Family Portrait€™, the cast get involved and things don€™t get any less strange. What do they all mean? I€™m still confused, but I€™ll definitely be tuning in to find out. American Horror Story premieres 10pm Wednesday 10th October on FX (US)
