Played by Gary Oldman in Ridley Scott's 'Hannibal' (released in 2001), Mason Verger rolled his way onto the screen as the awfully creepy pedophile. Although the film didn't go into as much detail as the book about Verger's story, Oldman gave a stand-up performance, explaining that he was an ex-patient of Hannibal and his only living victim. The problem, however, with Scott's version was that it cut out a very important character with regards to the Verger story. Verger's sister, Margot, is crucial when looking at him. The story is that Mason Verger - a well-known pedophile - also abuses his younger sister, Margot. Margot goes to Hannibal for some counseling who becomes appalled by Verger's behavior. Verger, therefore, becomes a patient of Hannibal and, as a means to save Margot, he drugs Verger, convinces him to peal off his face and feeds the remains to the dogs. This bit of information is so interesting because it paints Hannibal in a different light. He may be a serial killer, he may be a cannibal but he feels empathy. This is amplified when at the end of Harris's book, he tells Margot to kill her brother and blame him for it. Scott's film completely cuts out this story-line. Ryan Fuller's show, however, will be taking it on. Season two will introduce Mason Verger in all his evil glory and his sister too. We will see the story right from the beginning and get brought into the murky world of Hannibal's justifications. Above all, Mason Verger's character will make a delicious addition to the Gothic world that Fuller has adapted. Excited? You should be.
