As far as actual weddings go, this one was short lived, though it doesn’t mean that it’s not a great episode. After Marshall and Lily get back together and we’re all happy that the power couple have been reunited once more, they’ve gotten back to planning their wedding. Unfortunately, as it is revealed, Lily calling the wedding off and leaving Marshall as a blubbering wreck had some pretty severe consequences.

Lily learns of all the harsh things Marshall’s family has been saying about her, and it makes her so frightened to get married that they decide to elope instead. The episode is then filled with them trying and failing in various ways to tie the knot.

Eventually they find a boat captain willing to take them out to see and marry them, but he wants $5000 dollars to do it which the group doesn’t have. This leads to one of the funniest, and one of my personal favourite, scenes in the entire show as Barney plays a confusing and elaborate gambling game in order to get the money. All in all, the marriage only lasted for 12 seconds, but the episode was great on its own.
