She was funny - nailed her impression of a drooling frat guy.

She was gorgeous - Rachel Bilson is the ultimate girl next door.

Pity about the whole lesbian thing.

3. Stella

Ted came so close with dermatologist Stella, even making it as far as their wedding day before she ran out on him to be with her ex-husband Tony, the father of their child.

They were great together - that two-minute date in season three’s Ten Sessions is Ted at his romantic best. As Stella said herself: she loved Ted so much that it was just shy of enough.

She could well have been the one for him. He just wasn’t the one for her.
