Really, Karen fulfills much the same role in The Defenders as Trish does. They even share a scene at one point and compare notes on their own investigations into the Hand's schemes in New York. Karen also acts as Matt's confidante just as Trish does for Jessica.

However, what lifts Karen's place in the show is that we get to see her and Matt explore the aftermath of that shocking cliffhanger at the end of Daredevil season two: when she learned about Matt's vigilante activities. It's not quite as fully explored as we would like, but there is still Daredevil season three for that.
