Marvel Working On New Warriors TV Series Starring Squirrel Girl
Paging Anna Kendrick...
It looks like Squirrel Girl might be on her way to the MCU after all.
Talk of the character emerged last month, when Anna Kendrick revealed that her brother had given her the comic, thinking she'd suit the part (backed up by Edgar Wright and the Russos), while Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn mentioned he'd like to see Squirrel Girl join the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Now, according to TVLine, Marvel TV and ABC Studios are working on a comedy series about the New Warriors, which would have Squirrel Girl in a starring role. The New Warriors are like the junior Avengers of the Marvel Universe, generally made up of teenagers. One of their most famous arcs positioned them as stars of a reality TV show, and an accident they were involved in killed over 600 people, serving as one of the causes for Civil War.
The team usually includes characters such as Night Thrasher and Speedball, and Squirrel Girl has been a part of it before, but the spotlight would really be on the character here. It's been described as a half-hour comedy series, and is reportedly being shopped around cable and streaming services. The big question will be whether they can get Anna Kendrick to join the cast.
With Cloak and Dagger in the work at Freeform, and Damage Control at ABC, Marvel are branching out into lighter fare on TV, and this seems a continuation of that - as well as their attempts to completely conquer the TV market in the same way they have cinema,
