MCU: Loki Will Still Be A Villain In His Disney+ Series

He's just a bad guy, durr!

Loki's return to the MCU is one of the most exciting things about the Disney+ platform's need for content that doesn't entirely interfere with the main film timeline. And it returns one of the most enduringly popular characters in Marvel history to screens for one final 6-8 episode hoorah.

The further good news coming out of Comic Con - which can't even be diluted by the bloody awful logo they unveiled for the show - is that Loki won't be the good guy he would become by the time Thanos squeezed the life out of him in Avengers: Infinity War.

Tom Hiddleston spoke to Variety to basically confirm as much in the wake of the event:

"You guys saw Avengers right? So he's still that guy and just about the last thing that happened to him was that he got Hulk-smashed. So there's a lot of psychological evolution that is still yet to happen. Kevin [Feige] has generously told me what his plans are. I can't tell you any of them, but it is one of the most exciting creative opportunities I think I've ever come across. This is new territory, a new world, new challenges and I cannot wait to get started."

The take-aways from that are interestingly. Firstly, the creative element certainly fits with the idea of Loki travelling through history like he's some sort of Quantum Leaper. The whole thing is clearly a vehicle for Hiddleston to do as he pleases (within the conventional constraints of the MCU of course) and that can only be good news.

And secondly, the idea of this Loki being the one we saw in Avengers: Endgame's time heist sequences means he's still a full-on villain. In actual fact, he's exactly the same guy as he was when Hulk smashed him and won't have the opportunity to learn or grow morally as he did through Thor: The Dark World (and Lady Sif's death) and Thor: Ragnarok. Despite him still being a bit of a sh*tbag in both of those movies, they both informed him becoming the altruistic best version of himself who died at Thanos' hand.

Without them and without any sort of retribution from his invasion of Earth in The Avengers, the Loki we meet at the start of his own Disney+ series is still going to be the true God Of Mischief. And that can only be a good thing.
