For nine years, How I Met Your Mother has been telling the world's longest love story. Or, more accurately, the future version of Ted Mosby has been telling his children the world's longest love story. As with any series that runs as long as HIMYM has, there's bound to be some bumps and bruises along the way. Whether it's a stinker of an episode, an ultimately pointless storyline or a supporting character that has worn out its welcome, every show is going to experience its fair share of roadblocks. And for all the laughs it has given us over the years, all the speculation regarding everything from pineapples to the constant conspiracy theories regarding Robin turning out to be the titular mother, it is not without these hiccups. When a show starts out, it's fresh and exciting. In the case of How I Met Your Mother, it was an original take on the sitcom formula. It had a sense of heart and cleverness that is very rare in comedy today. But since the show started its seventh season, the shows' had something of a strange evolution. Basically, It began to rely heavily on gimmicks. While it's arguable that HIMYM's entire concept is a gimmick, the characters themselves should never be shoehorned into these scenarios. This late in the game, when any show is essentially being forced back onto the air because of high ratings, it's unlikely that the original intent of the show still remains. This forces any show, not just HIMYM, to adapt and start making the characters even more broad and outrageous. While it certainly keeps the money train chugging along, it ultimately forces the show into a position it was never meant to be in. Here are 10 mistakes Ted and the gang must avoid for the March 31st swan song of How I Met Your Mother, the hour-long series finale titled "Last Forever".
