After their father died and their relationship with their mother had soured, Ellie and her sister Delilah moved to Los Angeles and began living in the same apartment complex that Joe would eventually move to in season two. A passionate filmmaker, she draws in Joe's 'care' once he realises she's involving herself with Henderson and later Forty, two of the more unstable individuals the show has thrown up outside of Joe.

As much as she is a victim, and she definitely is, there's no denying the fact that Ellie certainly landed on her feet better than most. Despite the fact that she spent the whole of season 2 mixing with sketchy individuals, ignoring the warnings people around her were dishing out and solo investigating situations she knew were dangerous, she's managed to bag herself a new fresh start out in the world with Joe supplying a steady stream of cash to keep her going.
