Only Fools And Horses: Ranking All The Main Characters From Worst To Best

7. Boycie

Devious, chauvinistic, and successful, Boycie began as one of Del’s antagonists. Despite them having been friends from a young age, Boycie’s boasts over his success in the used car trade made him a target for the aspirational Derek.

Introduced in the second episode of the sitcom asking Del to hide an E-Type Jaguar, intended for his girlfriend, so his wife doesn’t get suspicious, Boycie revealed his dastardly persona. John Challis’ portrayal of the character is legendary, and rather than popularising a catchphrase, he became synonymous with a cackling laugh through a tight-lipped grin.

Boycie’s finest moment came in the second series during the episode ‘A Losing Streak.’ He and Del continually bet throughout the episode, with the hapless Trotter always coming up on the losing end.

By the show’s conclusion, Del Boy has bet everything he owns on one hand in a game of poker. Boycie casually reveals his hand of four kings, and rejoices when Del calls his ‘rotten two pair.’ When Boycie collects the money on the table until Trotter reveals his two pair is actually a four of a kind of aces. When Boycie asks Del how he managed to get that hand, it is revealed that both had cheated throughout, but Trotter cheated better.

Boycie’s character is much loved by British audiences, landing Challis the opportunity to star in a spinoff, The Green, Green Grass. This spinoff wasn’t very successful without characters from the main cast but proves how enduring the Boycie character was nonetheless.
