Adaptions of fantasy novels are starting to come thick and fast now. From Lord Of The Rings and The Hobbit on the big screen, to Game Of Thrones on TV, avid readers are finally getting to see long-beloved characters brought to life. The genre has proven that it doesn't have to be 'hokey'. Take the aforementioned Game of Thrones. Who would have thought a fantasy series could be as seen as th0ught-provoking and award-worthy as shows like Breaking Bad or Homeland? (Well I always did - fantasy has been a lifelong passion of mine - I've even written a couple of novels myself). And the special effects these days are of such a great standard that something which many may have considered unfilmable ten or twenty years ago, has the potential to be utterly believable. And now after years of rumours (I believe a film was touted on IMDB a few years back), Terry Brook's Shannara novels are finally getting the same treatment. I'm incredibly excited for this. The Sword Of Shannara, the first book in the saga, was my first fantasy novel after reading Lord of the Rings at age eleven. And with a whole wealth of stories to adapt, there is a scope for Shannara to establish itself on the screen for many years to c0me. But at the same time, it has to be done right. Admittedly hearing MTV over, say HBO, doesn't fill me with bags of confidence. But I'm willing to go into this series with open arms. It's got Jon Faverau at the helm for a start. Getting that kind of high profile focus is certainly intriguing. So as a long-term fan of Terry Brooks' fantasy saga, here are a few considerations for how to bring it to our television screens...
