Not all the references in Sherlock are callbacks to the source material, though. For instance, this exchange from The Hounds Of Baskerville is inspired by an unlikely source: Steven Spielbergs sharktastic Jaws.

When John walks into client Henry Knights mansion, hes a little taken aback. You rich? he asks, to which Henry nonchalantly replies Yeah.

Writer Mark Gatiss has said that this is a deliberate lift from Jaws, taken from the scene when Brody sees the high-tech equipment on Hoopers boat. Jaws has long been lauded by screenwriters for its script so it should be no surprise that Gatiss is a fan.
