1. Marcia Wallace Dies & Mrs. Krabappel Is Retired As A Character
In 2013, we lost the defining sarcastic "Hah!" of our generation, when Marcia Wallace, the voice of Edna Krabappel, passed away. Simpsons voice actors have passed before (we already mentioned Phil Hartman), but it was still a harsh reminder that nothing lasts forever, even though many of us have had the Simpsons in our lives for the majority of our time on this planet. Wallace passed as a result of pneumonia and sepsis, as well as complications from breast cancer, a week before her 71st birthday, on October 25th, 2013. A touching tribute was added to the opening credits of The Simpsons a month later, as Bart's chalkboard writing included just a single line: "We'll really miss you, Mrs. K." The decision was made by Al Jean and the other Simpsons showrunners to retire the character, as "no one could replace Marcia Wallace." In the season 25 episode "The Man Who Grew Too Much" we learn that Edna has died, and Ned remembers how much he loved her. Her portrait is added next to Maude's in the double-widower's home.
