The underlying story of the Diviner chasing the ship exists and provides something to entice viewers back who enjoy seeing something evolve. It gives a realistic passing of time and in turn the need to push the characters forward.

This is absolutely key to the show with each of the currently aired episodes expanding the crew but also staying true to the very core themes and principles that have made Star Trek great across the decades.

Lost and Found assembled a group of unlikely allies as a new family guided by Starfleet principles; Starstruck dropped in the first hints at exploration; First Con-tact did what it said on the tin. We have Janeway here to take fans who are new to Star Trek through the basics as we investigate it in each episode. While events might not run as smoothly as they might do with a full Starfleet crew under Picard on the Enterprise-D, the Protostar's cadets are learning every day.

Maybe it's not exactly exploring the Human Condition so literally since the only character of Earth origin is a hologram but it is looking at the emergence of a family and team who are putting aside their differences for the better.
