5. Hugh

Third of Five was the Borg drone rescued in The Next Generation, but you probably know him simply as Hugh. While Picard was initially set on using him to transmit some kind of destructive virus back to the Borg, he would later change his mind when Hugh started to regain some of his individuality. We became I, forced assimilation became unacceptable, and resistance became worthwhile.

Hugh bravely returned to the Borg in fear they might otherwise destroy the Enterprise, but in the end, his awakened individuality devastated the cube he called home. Cut off from the collective, Data's evil twin, Lore, took advantage by asserting dominance over the lost drones...but Hugh became instrumental in thwarting his nefarious plans.

Hugh was one of the earliest and best examples of a Borg drone painstakingly reclaiming their individuality. His story was the natural progression from Picard's Borg recovery and laid the foundation for Seven's eventual emancipation. And then Star Trek: Picard came along and brought him back just long enough to fall in love with all over again...before killing him. What's worse is that it felt like an insultingly banal death.

We're really not sure how they expected fans to react to the reintroduction and unnecessary death of a beloved character, no doubt crafted to fuel Picard's suffering.
