In what I personally consider to be the first watchable episode of The Next Generation, a radical warp experiment by a pompous and amateur warp field expert and his assistant, the Traveler, hurls the ship millions of light years outside the Milky Way and into Triangulum.

After a brief survey of the region, Picard orders the warp team to take them home, but the Traveler, who seems to have other plans, instead takes the Enterprise farther ahead into a great unknown blue galaxy where it seems thought and reality are intertwined.

In the first character development episode of the show, we meet Picard's long lost mother, Worf's first targ (even though he grew up on Earth and it really makes no sense), the horrors of Tasha's upbringing and some other pretty entertaining moments with various crewmen.
