The omnipotent beings known as the Q Continuum, particularly John de Lancie’s mischievous poltergeist-god, were a frequent staple of 90s era Trek.

They’ve yet to explicitly appear in earlier history incarnations, however, and if that were to change it would be a tremendous piece of fan service that could potentially lay the seeds of their later appearances in fascinating ways. If Q dismissed 24th Century humans as a savage, child-like race, then what would he have made of less evolved 23rd Century humans, in the thick of yet another brutal war?

Entities with powers of omnipotence comparable to Q have appeared as early as in TOS, with Trelane mentioned as an earlier example, so playing with the idea of revealing the Q Continuum in plain sight of known canon would be a very clever move.

It has seemed to be John de Lancie’s particular entity that takes a specific interest in the affairs of humanity, so while a guest appearance by him would be welcome, he also has the advantage of being able to take on different forms and guises. Even a subtle hint that Q is observing the transpiring events of the series with great distaste would put an entirely new spin not just on Discovery, but this entire era of Trek history.
