Upon arrival at Earth, Discovery is boarded by officers from the United Earth Defense Force.

United Earth was the government of Earth seen in Star Trek: Enterprise. This government encompassed all the nations of Earth and ran the United Earth Space Probe Agency (or UESPA) and Starfleet before the formation of the United Federation of Planets.

The inspectors who come aboard (including Captain Ndoye and new character Adira) wear uniforms with an "EDF" insignia. This insignia features the letters E D F in three of four quadrants, with the fourth quadrant containing a representation of Earth and Earth's moon. This insignia is reminiscent of the way the Milky Way Galaxy has traditionally been represented in the Star Trek Universe, divided into four quadrants: Alpha, Beta, Delta, and Gamma.
