1. Because There Are Still So Many Stories Left To Tell...
Perhaps conventional wisdom dictated that the Star Trek franchise circa 2009 was out of inspiration. CBS Execs seemed to be of the opinion that the wheels had finally come off of the wagon train. Maybe they had. Enterprise had explored the Pre-Kirk past (in ways, it must be said, that werent always crowd-pleasers) and the tenth movie, Star Trek: Nemesis controversially killed off fan-favourite character Data (for seemingly no reason besides the fact that the film lacked a suitable level of finality to its ending). Neither outing convinced the entirety of the fanbase, nor any casual viewers, that Star Trek was still worth watching. However, the beauty of Star Trek is that, over many, many years, it has created a very deep well of story ideas from which to draw. From half-glimpsed alien races (For my vote, The arrogant, xenophobic Shelliac from TNG were sorely underutilized), to new, heretofore unimaginable worlds (that can now be fully realized with the aid of modern CGI), Star Treks expansive, all-encompassing universe is absolutely alive with fresh story potential. In addition to this, the depth of characterization that is possible with an established character (and veteran actor) is simply staggering. With Captain Worf, it is possible to reap both the exciting benefits of a brand new series, as well as the story potential only available to an existing (and much loved) show like Star Trek. The fanbase is there, the star is there and the (would be) producers are there. As for the writers? There are literally hundreds of hungry young writers who would give their right arms to craft stories for Star Trek. Maybe Worf, the prodigal Son of Mogh, can be the character to reunite the splintered Trek fanbase and return classic Star Trek to its real home, on our screens and in our hearts. Make it so!
