This one is really weird. There are very few defense attorneys with the name recognition to appear in Star Trek. But that's just what Melvin Belli did. Belli was the attorney for Jack Ruby, who was in turn the man who shot Lee Harvey Oswald, who was in turn the man who assassinated United States President John F. Kennedy. Belli was supposedly given a part as a ploy to draw interest from new viewers. Sounds kind of dumb, doesn't it? I hated this episode even before I learned that little tidbit, but now I hate it even more. Belli makes his Star Trek appearance with his son (Melvin Caesar Belli) in The Original Series episode titled And the Children Shall Lead. Melvin Sr. plays Gorgan, a ghost in a sparkly parachute. If you recall, this is the episode with the shockingly politically correct mix of children who take over the Enterprise using a rather suggestive method of mind control. They are, of course, defeated in the end and finally get to mourn the death of their parents. Melvin's son plays one of the handjob mind control kids This episode also features Jennie Piccolo look-alike Pamelyn Ferdin in one of her many, many television guest appearances. By the way, Jennie Piccolo is from Happy Days, for those of you too young to remember the show.
