After Lucas recounts the events of Season 1 to Max, she dismisses the story as being unbelievable. Why? Because "it's a little derivative" and could've done with "more originality."

In other words, the character of Max in that moment became almost every critic of the first season, and perhaps some self-reflection from the Duffers on its flaws as well. The show has a few instances of meta-humour, but none so obvious or as ballsy as this.
