Bob started off sketchy, but the reveal that he was an inside man for Hawkins Lab never came. Instead he was just as he seemed: a kind, intelligent, nerdy guy who cared deeply for Joyce, and audiences in turn came to care for him by episode 8.

Naturally, then, he was killed off in absolutely horrific fashion. Not only does he get torn apart by the Demodogs just when it seemed he'd reached safety, but it all plays out in brutal slo-mo.
