The first trailer just landed for the upcoming third season of Netflix's Stranger Things - due to release on July 4th - and it's safe to say that from this brief three-minute glimpse, the Duffer Brothers look to be preparing their most lavish batch of episodes to date.

After the slightly more muted response to the show's second season - which was good, but ultimately felt like a bit of a retread - it seems like Season 3 is going to significantly alter the show's style and mood, while still serving up the character drama and, yes, the nostalgia that fans expect.

With the episode order reduced back to eight episodes - after season two's widely-ridiculed seventh episode was effectively a backdoor pilot for a spin-off series - fingers are tightly crossed that Stranger Things 3 might move the series on in a creative and unexpected way, rather than just serve as another moderately enjoyable wheel-spinning exercise.
