6. The Man Of Steel
It may only be one episode, but man is Tyler Hoechlin absolutely fantastic as the Man of Steel.
Given how Supergirl was so often positioned as being in the shadow of her cousin’s cape during the show’s debut season, many fans were worried that the addition of Kal-El to the show may overshadow the Maid of Might. Not only does Superman not do this, he also manages to come across as the quintessential, perfect take on a member of comic book royalty who has been much-maligned in recent years.
In the DC comic book world, The New 52 restart and the following years have seen many a writer struggle to get Superman right. Then there’s been Henry Cavill in Man of Steel and Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. Whilst Cavill himself hasn’t necessarily been bad, the way that the latest cinematic Supes has been written has been horrendous.
With The CW’s Superman, we’ve been introduced to an incarnation of comic books’ brightest shining light that we can all get behind. Confident in his abilities, assured of his place in the world, humble, approachable, and generally awe-inspiring, this is a take on Superman that is the best we’ve seen since Dean Cain in Lois & Clark - he really does feel like the perfect hero.
Sadly, the Man of Steel won’t be around for the long haul this season, but at least we know he’s out there… and that he’s, well, super. Now let’s just sit back and enjoy him over the next few episodes.
