Though much of Supergirl's fourth season has been heavily influenced by real world events, a significant portion of it has been inspired by a certain Superman comic book.

After seamlessly tying these differing aspects together through Superman villain Lex Luthor, the show finally pulled the trigger on the Big Bad's master plan as, after nearly a year of anticipation, this week's installment finally saw Kara come face to face with, well, herself.

In many ways, 'Red Dawn' was a quest for meaning. Heartbroken at the realisation that there was another version of her that was trained to be nothing more than a weapon, Kara searched for a way in which she could relate to the Red Daughter. Meanwhile, Alex looked for hidden meaning behind her relationship with her sister (a search that bore some emotional results) while, upon realising that he had been manipulated by Lex, Ben Lockwood sought answers.

The season's penultimate episode, 'Red Dawn' certainly delivered on the long-awaited battle between Supergirl and the Red Daughter, hitting some nice emotional beats in the process. Though it wasn't perfect, it has set the stage for what is shaping up to be a compelling finale.
