One of the biggest connections to Kara's cousin in this episode comes in the form of James (not Jimmy!) Olsen, the Pulitzer Prize winning photographer who's enjoyed a close relationship with Superman, and as revealed at the end of the episode is in on the secret all along. Comic fans will perhaps find him rather unrecognisable from the version that adorns the page - gone is the pale, freckled-face and ginger hair, replaced by the rather more muscular form of Brooks - but that change doesn't necessarily have to be a bad thing. He immediately comes off as being charismatic, and a good guy as he helps Kara out when she's about to get fired by Cat. While the obvious but needless references to Superman are irritating, this can provide a tangible connection that actually serves the story, and the two already have a good chemistry between them that should only get better as the season goes on.
